Our First Birthday!

Today, March 21, 2015, marks the one-year anniversary of the incorporation of the Center for Workers’ Rights.

We have come a long way over this last year. Even though the time has passed quickly, it is hard for me to remember life before the Center for Workers’ Rights. We have built a solid foundation to continue to provide services to low-wage workers’ in the Sacramento community.

Since we began providing legal services in September, we have:

  • Assisted over 135 workers with advice about workplace rights
  • Won nearly $50,000 in wages and penalties through the California labor commissioner
  • Obtained Unemployment Insurance Benefits for 3 low-wage workers. (Overall, our success at administrative hearings – labor commissioner and unemployment – is still at 100%)
  • Helped file labor commissioner claims for a total of more than $200,000 in unpaid wages and penalties
  • Held 10 Workers’ Rights Clinics in Davis
  • Involved 19 volunteer attorneys and 8 volunteer community members in our work
  • Began planning the April 12th Solano County Immigrant Workers’ Rights Day
  • Joined California low-wage worker advocates in advising the Employment Development Department on how to make unemployment benefits more accessible to low-wage workers
  • Published a worker-friendly labor poster that complies with most federal and state employment laws

I want to thank our amazing Board of Directors for helping launch the Center with gusto and to our Advisory Committee for providing me with expertise along the way.

Thank you for the most amazing year. I look forward to continuing to grow in the year to come and I hope you’ll join our efforts!

Sincerely,

Daniela Urban
